Derek Sinock: Blog for 4/25/2010 Discrimination vs. Privilege

At first, I thought this blog was going to be difficult. I then thought about what privilege has always meant coming from my parents and how I have always heard it used.

Then, I thought about the old civil rights movements. All the protesting, speeches, everything. They just wanted the same rights as everyone else. Then it hit me. Discrimination is not giving certain people privilege to certain things. Privilege is the right to do things. I know it seems simple but it kind of blew me away when I really thought about it. Affirmative action stopped discrimination in the workplace for the most part. People will get caught not giving equal opportunities to people of other races everyday.

I’ve always felt its wrong to discriminate, but now I feel more strongly about it. I never liked discrimination, and I never will give in. I don’t give certain privileges to people and never will.

3/21/2010 Derek Sinock: Wally Funk

Wally Funk was fairly unknown to me. I knew I had heard the name before, but I couldn’t really put my finger on it. But as soon as she started with the stories and showed the video, I then remembered who she was.

My grandfather was very much into aeronautics and that is where I had heard it.

The tests that this woman endured are pretty crazy, and made me cringe a bit. The stationary bike test is the one that really got me. Needles all over you while taking a test does not sound appealing at all. Also, the body temperature water test blew me away.

The altitude chamber sounds fun and also very awkward at the same time. The whole, floating around and being weightless thing sounds fun, but the loss of oxygen messing with your mind would kind of suck. The fact that they didn’t let her go into space after going through all of those tests, and blowing away everyone else, completely caught me off guard. I would have thought she would be the first person picked to go, but as she said, “it’s all politics.”

I had no idea that March was women’s history month, only because I had never really heard anybody mention it.

Wally was a great speaker, and I am very glad I got to hear/meet her.

Derek Sinock : Protest week of 3/7

“They say cut back, we say fight back!” One of the best quotes I’ve heard. For some reason I can’t post multiple pictures like this. I posted a slideshow with the same quote starting it.

Even the thought of hearing facial expressions and gestures were universal made me laugh. I know people from plenty of different countries, and everything is very different. Sure there are similarities, but nothing quite dead on. Age is even a huge factor in this. The personality of a person is huge in affecting emotions. I believe the younger you are, the easier the facial expression of the particular emotion you want to show will come out.

2/14/2010 for Derek Sinock: Magical Thinking

I’m reblogging this because it wasn’t graded yet.

For magical thinking, I think of knocking on wood. For example, say you have a family member and you mention them in casual conversation and say “oh, Uncle Pete? Yea he’s still alive and kicking”. You would knock on wood because it’s supposedly a jinx when you say the opposite of the truth. I have never had that happen to me.

Picking up a penny for good luck is magical thinking as well. Do you remember the last time you picked a penny up off the ground? Did you have good luck for the rest of the day after that? Because the last time I remember picking up a penny, I felt it as if it was a waste of my time. I believe there is an actual saying that goes with it and is “see a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck.” I don’t think anyone has actually benefited from finding a penny on the ground with the exception of someone that’s homeless.

Black cats are supposed to be a sign of bad luck if they cross your path. I have crossed many black cats walking to my car from my house. Nothing bad has ever happened. I’m really sure how this one came about, but I’m pretty sure someone was just afraid of black cats when they made this up.

A rabbits foot for good luck. Please give me a break. Carrying around a rabbits foot is supposed to be good luck, but I will gladly testify that it is definitely not. My kind mother had a rabbits foot on her key chain for her car for quite a while. With the foot on the key chain, nothing good even came out of this so called good luck charm. Now I’m sure people have had good luck, but its all been coincidence.

In my personal opinion, I believe karma is very wishful thinking even though I am very caught up in it. What goes around comes around. I’m try to always be kind to people, but I never have anything good come my way.

(Karma was more of a rant)

After reading the first article, it really made me think. Triandis’ definition of culture is very broad. Whenever I think of culture, I immediately think of religion. I never really thought about the social systems we build around it or the language we use everyday (but I wouldn’t think people in Austria say “gnarly” or “rad” anyway). I never really thought about it, but America is very emic. For instance, if you looked at California and looked at its culture, then looked at China or Japan, we are two completely different worlds. It helps we’re separated by an ocean, but it seems to be huge differences. Ethnocentrism also seems to be everywhere in our country. I see on the news everyday, random interviews from people on the street praising our country and speaking ill of foreign countries such as Iraq and Iran while more than likely having never been there. And as for his values he lists for cultures, it’s dead on. I didn’t realize it was actually that simple. Everything actually does fall into a category as he stated with the colors.

I didn’t get to finish the entire second article, so I feel i shouldn’t write my entire thoughts about it yet. I may not get credit for it but I would still like to finish it as it seems interesting.

Finally at a computer.

I seem to have been away from my house for the entire weekend. I will consider myself lucky if I can finish all of the work I need to.
